Why We Do What We Do | Kids in Sunday Gatherings

This week’s blog post comes from our Children’s Ministry Director, Nancy Olson.

Over the past few months, you may have noticed how we have included our children from time to time in our Sunday morning gatherings for singing as a collective church family. We have been doing this primarily to bless our teacher volunteers with a time of rest, but we also believe this is a healthy rhythm for our church body, families, kids, and the next generation. Our children see how their parents worship, how our gatherings flow (so it’s not a mystery!), and learn what discipleship can look like as a family.

At FBC, we want to help people find and follow Jesus, and part of this is that we strive to help parents lead and shape their families; Sunday worship gatherings are one way we can do this.

In Matthew 19:14, Jesus says, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” And again, we are reminded in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

Including children occasionally in our Sunday gatherings helps promote what those verses are highlighting.

With this in mind, we plan on having our children join us every last Sunday of each month to join in our time of singing, and then we’ll dismiss them for the remainder of the morning to the Kids of Faith classes. We want to form our kids to see that they are an integral part of the FBC family, and this is one way we can tangibly display this desire. Additionally, this rhythm will help form our kids more deeply in the good news of Jesus as they sing, hear stories, and see the people of God worshipping together!

Thanks,

Nancy
